Our Christmas Story

Christmas was so strange this year without JP.  He’s not super into the holidays, not the way I am anyway, but his presence was definitely missed.  I don’t plan on spending any more Christmases without him after this one.

Calvin and Ethan knocked right out on Christmas Eve after leaving cookies for Santa and reading “The night before Christmas”.  Piper was much too excited and kept finding reasons to get out of bed.  Finally, I hopped online and we tracked Santa.  She saw him deliver a  present and then wanted to watch him deliver ALL the presents so that plan almost backfired.....but I told her he wouldn’t come to our house unless she went to sleep so she trudged back to bed.  Luckily, I had already wrapped all the gifts so I just had to put Calvin’s workbench together and arrange everything under the tree.

When the kids came out in the morning, they were pretty mellow, just wanted to start opening.  Calvin saw his workbench right away and just wanted to play with that and forget all his other gifts.

Piper’s Barbie house was hidden in the other corner and she didn’t notice it until we were almost done.  She then tried to climb over all the presents in front of it and pull it from behind the tree, almost knocking the tree over in the process.    To say the Barbies were a huge hit would be an understatement.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her have that kind of reaction to a present before and she’s been playing with them pretty much non stop since Christmas.  She combs their hair, changes their clothes and shoes and has these super elaborate conversations between them.  Best Christmas Ever for her, I think.

Calvin got tons of Playdoh which he wanted to play with right away, lots of new trucks and building sets and a few new puzzles among other things.

Oh and that truck?  He loved it until I took it out of the box, turned it on and it started chasing him.  I kept finding it on it’s side and he would get so mad when I would put it back on it’s wheels because he didn’t want it “vrooming” by itself.  Crazy kid.  Ethan loves it though...

....which is good because Calvin has already decided that all of Ethan’s new toys are his.

Ethan opened a present or two but was, of course, more interested in the wrapping paper and his sister’s Barbies.

We spent the rest of the morning playing with toys, cleaning up the mess and making phone calls to family.  In the afternoon, we went to Audrey’s parents house for dinner (Audrey and I mended our friendship back in November and I’m so happy we did, she’s been so helpful this whole time JP has been gone).  Dinner was delicious, I won $25 in McDonald’s gift cards by winning 3 out of 5 Christmas games and the kids had a blast playing with all the other kids.  Being so busy helped me keep my mind off JP not being there but by the time I came home, I was just drained.  Physically and emotionally.  So yesterday, I took down Christmas and am not going to start preparing for our move to North Dakota, hopefully at the end of January.

Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and that you have a safe and happy new year!
